A reducer is a type of transition molding used to smoothly bridge the gap between two flooring surfaces of different heights. While a T-molding is for floors of the same or very similar height, a reducer features a gradual slope that “reduces” from a higher floor to a lower one. Here’s how it works and why it’s used: Eliminates Trip Hazards: By creating a tapered transition, a reducer helps prevent tripping when stepping from a higher floor onto a lower floor. Protects Flooring Edges: Like other transition strips, a reducer covers and protects the exposed edges of both surfaces, reducing wear and tear (chipping, delamination, etc.). Provides a Finished Look: Instead of an abrupt or unfinished edge, a reducer creates a neat, professional-looking boundary between two different types or heights of flooring. Various Installation Scenarios: Moving from thick hardwood/laminate to thinner vinyl or tile. Stepping down from tile to concrete, or one room to another. Creating a level change between different areas of the home. Note: There are different styles of reducers to accommodate floating floors (which may require an overlap reducer) versus glued or nailed-down floors (which might use a flush reducer).
